EXPERIENCE

Sushi Mon on West Sahara Avenue is a neighborhood Japanese restaurant with made-to-order all-you-can-eat sushi and a substantial selection of small dishes. It occupies a shopping-center storefront near Cimarron Road, serving the west side of Las Vegas. The meal takes place at the sushi counter or a dining-room table, with food prepared after each order.

The room is compact and casual. Dark counters, overhead lighting and televisions give it the familiar appearance of a local sushi bar. Counter seats put the glass fish case and the chefs directly in front of you. Tables accommodate a meal with company while keeping the preparation area part of the room. There is enough going on behind the counter to occupy a solo meal without making the restaurant feel ceremonial.

AYCE service brings successive plates to your seat. One order can combine individual pieces of nigiri, a specialty roll and something hot from the kitchen; the next can return to the fish or try another preparation. The selection is broad enough that two meals here can look quite different. A plate of salmon and yellowtail sushi, a shrimp-tempura roll and pork belly all belong to the same menu, giving a table several ways to assemble dinner.

The appeal is straightforward: a small sushi restaurant with room to order widely. Lunch and dinner offer AYCE choices, and à la carte service is available alongside them. The format works for a brief midday meal or an evening spent moving through several orders. Small rounds keep the table manageable and leave room for another dish. Sushi Mon Sahara suits a meal built around choosing, tasting and ordering again, with the sushi bar close at hand.

FOOD

Sushi Mon’s food begins with nigiri and rolls, and further includes Japanese small plates and dressed seafood. The range includes straightforward fish over rice, rolls with several fillings and toppings, and cooked dishes that can take up a substantial part of the meal. Tuna, salmon and yellowtail provide an easy starting point, with albacore, eel and shellfish adding other textures and preparations.

Nigiri keeps the individual fish recognizable. Salmon and yellowtail offer a simpler order than the more heavily dressed rolls. Garlic tuna adds garlic ponzu, while Cajun albacore introduces a seasoned, seared preparation. Yuzu yellowtail gives another citrus variation. These choices make it possible to stay with individual pieces for several rounds while moving between plain fish and more assertive seasoning, without committing to a whole specialty roll.

The fish-focused specialty rolls repeat their principal ingredient inside and out. Hawaiian Tuna combines tuna and cucumber with more tuna and spicy garlic ponzu. Arizona Yellowtail follows a similar arrangement with yellowtail. Washington Salmon puts salmon in the filling and over the top. They are useful choices when one particular fish is the reason for ordering, with the cucumber and rice supporting that preference rather than a long mixture of fillings.

Lemon Blossom takes a different approach, combining crab, avocado and cucumber with yellowtail, salmon, sliced lemon and ponzu. Its citrus dressing distinguishes it from the sweeter eel-sauce rolls. Mon Special pairs spicy tuna and cucumber with tuna and spicy ponzu. Both make the restaurant’s preference for dressed fish clear: there is plenty of room for citrus, heat and sauce within the sushi selection, alongside the simpler nigiri orders.

Shrimp tempura and eel carry the more substantial rolls. Crazy Dragon puts eel and avocado over shrimp tempura and cucumber, finished with eel sauce. Spider brings soft-shell crab together with avocado and cucumber. These rolls add fried seafood and a fuller bite to a fish-centered meal. Their combination of rice, avocado and richer toppings also makes a small order useful before deciding how much more of the roll menu to try.

The kitchen supplies enough small plates to give dinner variety beyond sushi. Spicy garlic edamame starts with heat and a savory coating. Gyoza brings pork-filled dumplings, while shrimp and vegetable tempura provide battered, fried pieces. Pork belly offers a meat option between seafood plates. Baked green mussels and soft-shell crab keep the cooked selection connected to the rest of the menu without requiring another roll or another serving of sushi rice.

Dressed seafood includes tuna poki salad, spicy seafood salad and carpaccio preparations. Salmon carpaccio uses green onion, furikake and yuzu sauce; yellowtail carpaccio combines avocado, lemon and jalapeño with ponzu and sriracha. These are distinct from the rice-based sushi orders. Selected premium dishes carry individual order limits, so their place in the meal differs from foods that can be reordered freely. Lunch and all-day selections also differ on marked items.

Mochi and green tea ice cream provide a small dessert after the savory orders. The broader à la carte menu also includes bento meals, rice bowls and full noodle dishes, which have their own ordering terms. Within AYCE, the clearest food progression is fish first, specialty rolls next, with hot small plates interspersed. There is ample choice without needing to turn every category into a separate course.
