Madison’s Hot Pot 608 has disappeared from 2825 University Ave., and Szechuan Garden is now operating in its place. On the surface, that looks like a familiar restaurant turnover: one concept closes, another takes the room.
The paperwork makes the story more interesting.
When Madison approved the original restaurant liquor license in June 2022, the licensee was listed as Szechuan Garden Madison LLC doing business as Hot Pot 608. In other words, the Szechuan Garden name now on the building was already sitting behind the Hot Pot 608 name when the all-you-can-eat concept began.
That strongly suggests a concept conversion or rebranding rather than a completely unrelated operator taking over the space, although current corporate filings have not been located to prove that ownership membership is identical today.
From AYCE Hot Pot to a Szechuan Makeover
Hot Pot 608 was a dedicated all-you-can-eat hot-pot restaurant with meats, seafood, vegetables, noodles, appetizers and sauces built around tabletop cooking. Customer activity shows the University Avenue location remained open into summer 2026, before local residents began noticing covered signage and a Szechuan Garden coming-soon message in late August.
Szechuan Garden appears to have held its grand opening around Sept. 22. In a Sept. 26 social post, the restaurant confirmed that it occupies the former Hot Pot 608 space. Asked what happened to 608, the account replied that “608 retired” and received a “Szechuan makeover.”
The phrasing is unusually concise, but it fits the licensing history remarkably well.
The Unlimited Format Appears to Be the Part That Retired
Early diner reports describe ordering individual dishes from Szechuan Garden’s menus rather than working through an AYCE hot-pot format. No current all-you-can-eat program has been announced for the new concept, and the restaurant’s public messaging centers on Szechuan cooking rather than tabletop hot pot.
That means Madison has, at minimum, lost this particular version of Hot Pot 608 and its University Avenue AYCE line. Whether Szechuan Garden eventually adds a buffet, hot-pot service or another unlimited component remains unknown.
For now, the transition is a useful reminder that restaurant closures are not always clean breaks. Sometimes the name on the liquor license has been quietly telling you what comes next for four years.
