EXPERIENCE

Rao Gari Vindu builds its buffet program around the idea in its name: “vindu” is a Telugu word for feast. Rather than running the same buffet all day, every day, the restaurant uses several recurring formats: an unlimited South Indian breakfast on weekends, a Friday lunch buffet and weekend lunch buffets. That makes the experience useful for two different kinds of visits. Breakfast is a chance to explore traditional savory morning foods, while lunch opens into rice dishes, curries, grilled meats, vegetables and fried specialties.

The dining room is polished without feeling formal. Large windows bring in daylight, chandelier lighting dresses up the space, and the full bar and banquet operation make it clear that the restaurant also handles parties and larger gatherings. For a regular buffet meal, though, the setting is straightforward: settle in, make a first pass, then return for smaller portions of whatever caught your attention.

Weekend breakfast is where some unfamiliar names become easy to understand once they are on the plate. Idli are soft steamed cakes made from rice and lentils. Medu vada are crisp, savory lentil rings. Dosa are thin, griddled crepes, while uttapam are thicker and softer. They are commonly paired with sambar, a warm lentil and vegetable stew, and several chutneys. Together, those foods make the breakfast feel very different from a typical American buffet.

Lunch is broader and easier to approach by thinking in simple groups: fragrant biryani rice, saucy chicken or vegetable curries, roasted tandoori meats, lentil dishes, fried appetizers and a few Indo-Chinese items such as noodles or Manchurian-style dishes. The appeal is not simply the number of pans on the line. It is the opportunity to try several forms of Indian cooking in one meal, then go back for the dishes that make the most sense to you.

FOOD

Rao Gari Vindu is especially useful for buffet diners who want Indian food explained by the plate rather than by a long list of unfamiliar names. The kitchen has a strong Andhra and South Indian identity, but the buffet also reaches into North Indian cooking, tandoori dishes and Indo-Chinese favorites. In practical terms, that means rice, lentils, vegetables, breads, grilled or roasted meats, fried starters and several kinds of curry can all appear in the same meal.

Weekend breakfast is the clearest introduction to the South Indian side of the restaurant. Idli are mild, soft steamed cakes made from a fermented rice-and-lentil batter. Medu vada use lentils too, but are fried into crisp rings with a tender center. Dosa are thin, lightly crisp crepes made on a griddle, while uttapam are thicker and more pancake-like. Sambar, a seasoned lentil and vegetable stew, and coconut or other chutneys are used for dipping, spooning and mixing across the plate.

At lunch, biryani is one of the easiest places to begin. Biryani is long-grain rice cooked with spices and usually meat or vegetables, giving it much more flavor than plain steamed rice. Rao Gari Vindu’s larger menu includes several versions. Some use chicken or goat; others bring in regional ingredients such as gongura, a tart leafy green used in Andhra cooking. The buffet selection rotates, so the exact biryani may vary from one visit to another.

The chicken dishes show another side of the kitchen. Tandoori chicken is marinated and cooked at very high heat, traditionally in a clay oven, which gives it roasted edges and a drier finish than a curry. Andhra chicken curry is saucier and typically more direct with chile and spice. Chicken 65 is quite different again: small pieces of chicken are fried and seasoned for a spicy, snack-like dish that is easy to sample alongside rice or on its own.

Vegetarian choices are not treated as an afterthought. Bagara baingan is eggplant cooked in a rich sauce built from ingredients such as peanuts, coconut and tamarind, giving it both nuttiness and tang. Palak paneer pairs cubes of mild Indian cheese with a spinach sauce. Dal dishes are based on lentils, while chana masala uses chickpeas in a spiced tomato-based preparation. These are substantial foods, not just side dishes, and they make it easy to build a full plate without meat.

The Indo-Chinese section adds foods that may be more immediately familiar in texture. Hakka noodles are stir-fried noodles with vegetables and savory seasoning. Manchurian-style dishes usually involve fried chicken or cauliflower tossed in a seasoned sauce with garlic, chile and soy-influenced flavors. They are Indian interpretations of Chinese cooking and provide a crisp, saucy break from the curries and rice dishes.

Dessert is a good place to finish with something simple. Gulab jamun are soft milk-based dumplings soaked in sweet syrup. Rice pudding offers a cooler, spoonable option, while carrot halwa is a warm, dense dessert made by cooking grated carrots with milk, sugar and spices. The buffet will not necessarily include every item named here on every visit, but the larger point is consistent: Rao Gari Vindu gives diners several clear ways into Indian cooking without requiring them to already know the vocabulary.
